I’m glad you’re home

Gary read this at Mom’s Prayer service……

Reflecting back on the last five weeks I realize I’ve learned a great deal about life and loss on the way to the worlds above this one.

Thankfully, we had the loving aid of the exceptional staff at Agrace Hospice, all of whom are truly committed to their work providing comfort to the patient and at the same time extending support to soon to be grieving loved ones.

Staying the night with Mom each and every night I witnessed the “Hard work” she was doing in these last days…she said this job was far harder than any job she’d ever had. As her appetite declined, we continued a ritual she’s had for a long time…toast and jam before bed. At first, she’d eat it all and have her “coffee”—hot water actually, to go with.

Gradually, she’d eat less and at some point suggested I eat the other half, which I did. Shortly after she passed I made two pieces of toast—it seemed like the right thing to do.

I am grateful from the bottom of my heart to have been able to share so very much of my adult life with Mom… working together at the frame shop, helping me cook Sunday dinner, even drying the dishes together.

So today the happiness, I find in these memories far outweigh the sadness I feel over her passing.

On the evening of December 4th at 10:15 I kissed Mom good night …she was lightly sleeping, I thought. She sweetly said “Good Night Honey, I’m glad you’re home.” So tonight I will kiss her again and repeat those words …

Good Night Honey, I’m glad you’re home.
